December is often painted as a time of stillness and reflection, yet in truth many of us find it the hardest month to slow down. Diaries overflow with deadlines, gatherings, and endless to-do lists, and before we know it, the pace leaves us scattered and depleted. It is in this very season of overstimulation that the practice of returning inward becomes most vital.
This month inside Soul Sanctuary, our theme is Through the Self, to the Self - an invitation to carve out pockets of space amidst the noise, to stay anchored, and to keep gently coming home. Yoga reminds us that the path is never about becoming someone new, but about peeling back the layers until we return to the heart of who we already are.
Patanjali, the sage of the Yoga Sutras, expressed it simply:
“Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.”
Each breath, each movement, each pause is a step along this path - an unfolding back into presence, into wholeness.
Through the Koshas: Yoga’s Inner Layers of Being
In yogic philosophy, the human body is constituted by the three bodies - the physical, the subtle (or astral) and the causal (or karmic). Within the three bodies are the Five Koshas, the five sheaths or layers of our being, describe this inward journey with such clarity.
🔸 We begin with the outermost layer, the Annamaya Kosha - the physical body. Through movement and sensation, we connect, release, and arrive.
🔸 From there, the Pranamaya Kosha, the energetic body, awakens through the breath, guiding the flow of prana, our life force.
🔸 We then meet the Manomaya Kosha, the mental body - the thoughts, stories, and emotions that ripple through us.
🔸 With practice, these begin to soften, allowing space for the Vijnanamaya Kosha, the wisdom body, to shine through.
🔸 Finally, we touch the Anandamaya Kosha, the bliss body - the quiet, radiant essence of being that rests at the heart of it all.
The five koshas (Annamaya, Pranamaya, Manomaya, Vijnanamaya, Anandamaya) form a framework in yogic philosophy for understanding the layers of self and how yoga practices like breathwork, asana, and meditation help integrate body, mind and spirit.
These everyday rituals remind us that even in the busiest seasons, we can return again and again, to the quiet home of the self.
Nervous System Regulation Through Yoga & Breath Awareness
Lately, “nervous system regulation” feels like a wellness trend word, but behind it lives profound healing. The nervous system is the undercurrent that carries life’s energies - balancing activation, rest, connection - even as we move through seasons of celebration, obligation, or overwhelm.
When our system is supported, we feel grounded, alert, and responsive; breath flows easily, emotions soften, and presence becomes our anchor. But under the weight of chronic stress, that balance frays. In fact, a UK survey recently found that one in nine adults - around 11% - report feeling stressed every single day, and over 60% feel stress at least weekly (ciphr.com).
Over time, this strain may manifest as tension, disrupted sleep, digestive upset or simply a quiet sense of being carried away by life’s currents.
True regulation is not about perfect calm. It’s about resilience and the capacity to move between states with awareness, compassion, and self-tenderness. It’s about noticing when the system is off, pausing, and returning: to breath, to safety, to the soft centre that is always waiting.
As we journey this month Through the Self, to the Self, we offer regulation not just as technique, but as grace. It is the practice of remembering through movement, breath and ritual, that in every moment we may come home again.
A Season of Support:
REGULATE CHALLENGE & YOGANAURY 10
This time of year can leave even the most grounded among us feeling stretched thin. To support you, we’ve created something special: from the 6th - 12th December, a brand new challenge: REGULATE will guide you through daily practices designed to soothe, steady, and recalibrate your nervous system. Think of it as a balm for the chaos - a gentle gift of calm to carry you through the festive season with more presence and ease.
This 7-day challenge is more than just calm for December; it’s a preparation - steadying body, breath, mind, and soul for our 10th and Final Yoganuary, beginning on 1st January 2026. After ten beautiful years, this closing chapter will be one to remember, and we would be honoured to have you with us.
To join us for both Regulate in December and the Final Yoganuary in January 2026 - as well as all of December’s practices in our theme Through the Self, to the Self - you can step inside the Soul Sanctuary today with our different membership options.
This time of year, with its darker skies and natural stillness, reminds us that we grow not in spite of the shadows, but through them. Just as the earth rests to prepare for spring, we too can find strength in pausing, reflecting, and nourishing our roots. Through The Self, To The Self is about honouring every part of the journey - the messy, the tender, the radiant - and remembering that all of it is welcome.
This December, may you allow yourself to pause. To breathe. To move. To feel. And through every layer - body, breath, mind, and beyond - may you come home to the self that has been there all along.
Explore yoga philosophy, the koshas, breathwork and nervous system regulation this month as you are invited to find further stillness, inner awareness and support with our Regulate challenge + Yoganuary 10 2026.
